Portland Seamen's Bethel
Built 1881
203-209 NW Third Avenue
Architect: Justus Krumbein
Cast-Iron Manufacturer: Unknown
Built to look after the safety of early area sailors, the Seamen’s Bethel consists of two portions. The four story southern section is in use today as a rescue mission, while the two story portion to the north is occupied by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. Although in need of restoration, the integrity is high with storefronts intact and very few elements missing. The cast iron’s simple fluting, button ornaments, and chamfered edges are not replicated in other Portland cast iron buildings.
